For those going to Philmont, beginning in 2008, additional training is required for at least one adult member of each trek. The Wilderness First Aid course is a 16 hour training session covering first aid techniques needed in the backcountry. There are alternative courses and Scouters receive a reduced rate on the course when taught by other Scouters.

The training is primarily conducted by the Red Cross but there are alternative agencies that provide a similar, approved course.  Details are available in the icon Philmont Medical Training Requirements flyer.
